Community at BFS

Spring FrolicAn engaged community

The BFS community is close-knit and engaged in the life of the school - many of our activities are made possible through the generous contribution of our families’ time, energy, and creativity. Volunteers play vital roles on committees for our major fundraising events (Glowga, Snowflake Festival, and the Auction) and help out with smaller fundraising events (Lasagna Dinner, Ghost Walk, and Book Fair) that fund specific projects and class trips. All members of the BFS community are asked to support the school’s Annual Fund to the best of their ability.

PTAC (Parent, Teacher, Administration Committee) - our school-wide parent-teacher organization - maintains a positive and welcoming environment for all parents and works closely with the school in meeting its current needs.  The leadership of PTAC (the clerk(s) of PTAC, head of school, advancement director, one faculty representative, and each class parent) holds monthly meetings during the school year to discuss volunteer needs, special events and activities, and any issues that may arise. All parents are automatically members of PTAC.

Art Show: This event is held each year in the spring in conjunction with Grandparents’ Day. The show highlights the artistic abilities of our BFS students. A variety of mediums are on display including painting, woodworking, clay, and more.

Auction: BFS’s largest fundraiser is held each spring. This adult-only event is attended by the greater BFS community and supported by businesses and services in the Bucks County and surrounding areas. Many volunteer and sponsorship opportunities are available.

Back to School Night: Held in September, this evening begins with a welcome and introduction from the Head of School and the BFS faculty and staff followed by time in your child’s individual classroom. The teachers have prepared materials for parents in regards to the curriculum and activities your child will experience throughout the school year.

Book Fair: Sponsored by the Library and coordinated and staffed by parents, the book sale occurs in conjunction with Parent/Teacher conferences in either October or January.

Brick Ceremony: The school community gathers to honor the graduating students as each sets a brick engraved with their name in the school patio. An alum speaks to the class and welcomes them into the BFS alumni society.

Class Picnics: Students from each grade gather at the home of a family from their grade on the last official day of school. Parents help organize and provide lunch. The teacher attends and brings the class’s memory book compiled over the school year for all to enjoy.

Frolics: Each fall and spring the school community comes together to help beautify the school grounds, spruce up classrooms and learning environments, and assist with any other special projects that may be on the BFS wish list.

Glowga!: Held each fall, our Glowga! – or glow in the dark yoga – fundraiser is an opportunity for all community members (regardless of age or ability) to get together for a fun night of joy, exercise, and fundraising for the School.

Ghost Walk and Halloween Party: Each October on the Friday before Halloween, the Eighth Grade teacher, students and parents transform the Upper School into a fun and frightful haunted house to help raise funds for the eighth grade trip to Williamsburg. The seventh-grade families host the accompanying Halloween party in the auditorium complete with games, snacks, and costume contests. Please note this activity is age-appropriate for students in Grades 3-8 only and has become a much looked forward to event by the lower school students.

Graduation: Held on the Thursday evening before the Class Picnics, this ceremony brings together the families of the graduates, the Head of School, faculty, staff, and alumni in a celebration of the students and their accomplishments as they move forward on their journey of lifelong learning.

Grandparents’ & Special Friends’ Day: Held in May each year usually the Friday before Mother’s Day, this annual event celebrates families in a special way, by honoring our students’ Grandparents and Special Friends. This day is a school-wide event organized by the Fifth & Third Grade parents. Grandparents and Special Friends join their students in classrooms, are treated to a delicious lunch served in the school gym by the Fifth Graders, and have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful artwork on display in the auditorium that the students have worked on during the school year.

High School Admissions Night: Each spring BFS invites Admissions Directors from a variety of high schools to come and provide information about their schools to BFS students and their parents.

Holiday Concerts: Prior to the holiday break students delight the school community with their festive holiday program. Days and times vary depending on the grade and dismissal for holiday break. Lower School performs during the school day and 3rd grade through 8th Grade perform twice, once at assembly and once during a more formal evening program.

Lasagna Dinner: This dinner is held on a Friday evening in November and hosted by the Sixth Grade with help from their parents. The event is widely attended by current families, friends, grandparents, alumni, faculty, and staff. The funds raised from the dinner help to defray the costs of the sixth grade trip to Washington D.C.

MLK Day: BFS and PTAC join to provide special opportunities and activities focused on service and diversity to our students, parents, and any others in our community who would like to participate in the meaning of this special day.

Move Up Day: The end of May provides an opportunity for students to experience what it will be like to be in the next grade. They spend time in the classroom with the teacher and receive some pointers on what to expect in the next school year. The graduating class has the opportunity to become kindergartners again.

Pet Day: Held in September each year, students and parents are encouraged to bring their pets (be it real, a drawing, a photograph, or a stuffed animal) to the Jane Jackson House for a meet and greet with other families. This community-building event is one of a kind and not to be missed!

Talent Shows: Twice a year, students participate in talent shows (Lower School in the fall and Middle and Upper School in the Spring). Acts range from magic tricks and jokes to instrumental pieces and elaborate dance routines. All students are encouraged to participate and be cheered on by their supportive school community.

Track & Field Day: Held two weeks prior to the end of school. Teams of Blue and Grey gather to compete in friendly games on the school fields. The finale includes a school-wide tug-of-war and egg toss that even brings back some BFS alumni. All celebrate the end of events with refreshing popsicles.

Upper School Day: In September students in the 6th, 7th and 8th Grades participate in a day-long developmental workshop. Supported by teachers and administration, activities touch on peer issues, conflict resolution, role-playing, team building, and other skills that reflect the Quaker values of the BFS mission. Upper School parents provide snacks and lunch for the day’s events.
